HAS Rehabilitation Technician Training Program (RTTP)

The Need for Rehabilitation
There are many causes of disability in Haiti. While malnutrition and the diseases of tropical poverty are both visible and well-documented, other chronic conditions and accidental injuries have a huge and growing impact on Haitians. Strokes are extremely common and often strike when people are in their 30s or 40s, the prime years of income generation and family responsibilities. What is more, increased road traffic and crowded pick up trucks (tap-taps) have led to a large number of severe injuries related to motor-vehicle accidents.

It is estimated that nearly one in ten Haitians lives with some sort of physical, mental, intellectual or sensory disability. Even treatable illnesses can leave patients with the burden of disability without appropriate therapy to help ease them into full recovery.

Rehabilitation can be the pivotal factor that allows patients to begin to walk again, regain function in a hand, or return to working in their fields. In more severe cases of permanent impairment, rehabilitation helps people learn how to best use the abilities they do have. Even the smallest increases in functionality can help a disabled person in the journey towards complete reintegration into society.
