HAS Haiti Timber Re-Introduction Project (HTRIP)

A Sustainable Plan

Following this model, HTRIP will have lasting impacts over time, as it reduces its inputs. HTRIP will continue to establish new demonstration plots in ten communities each year, until we have 80 participating communities. HTRIP targets the Artibonite's most impoverished mountain communities, and it is committed to continuing its expansion higher in the mountains where the need is greatest. HTRIP's long-term relationship with each community focuses on eduction and capacity-building, and we are already watching a very high proportion of the trees planted growing to maturity. The trees will eventually be harvested in a multi-year, sustainable manner that will involve replanting to maintain the viability of the plots. We are in for the long haul, committed to being around to support participating communities from the time the first tree is planted in the demonstration plot, to the time of sustainable harvesting the trees. We will be there to help farmers market their timber products for the vital income they represent, and we will be there to support them as they replant the next cycle of trees.

The Friends of HAS is very pleased with HTRIP's progress to date. Our agroforestry project is currently working in 41 communities in all three communes of the central Artibonite Valley. Between the community nurseries and the central nursery that HTRIP maintaines in Deschapelles, we have produced and planted 385,393 seedlings since HTRIP began in 2006. Almost 2,000 men and women have completed HTRIP's educational cycle, and we hope to add as many as 1,100 more in the 2010-2011 season alone.
