![]() Community Health The Community Health Division delivers primary health care to seven outlying dispensaries and two health centers through a system of doctors, nurses, animatrices, and volunteer workers. HAS community health provides services to the 285,000 people living in Haiti's Artibonite Valley through collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Health and several international voluntary agencies. At the time of the hospitals founding, Haiti was one of the most densely populated areas of the world with high rates of infant mortality and premature death. The burden of disease in the Artibonite Valley also included neonatal tetanus, intestinal parasites and malaria. A partnership with Harvard School of Public Health led to the development of community level health programs including immunizations and health education. Programs were built on a continually updated census of the region, allowing for the measurement of the effectiveness of health initiatives. These efforts produced dramatic results with the eradication of neonatal tetanus in the late 1960s. Current programs address continuing high levels of malnutrition, tuberculosis and AIDS, as well as recent increases in traumatic injuries and chronic diseases. |
