Hôpital Albert Schweitzer, whose success is seen as a model for health programs in other third world countries, was designed to provide curative services to patients in an efficient, attractive setting. The hospital facility serves patients in Medicine, Surgery and Pediatrics, while outpatient clinics serve patients on a daily basis. Two operating theaters,a laboratory, x-ray services, and a pharmacy, combine to support a culturally appropriate level of care. Clinical services are supported by an integral water system, independently generated electric power, a machine and vehicle shop, laundry and food services.

Early in the hospital’s history, the professional staff was primarily expatriate; however, now 95% of the almost 600 staff positions are filled by Haitians. The campus currently includes over 40 buildings, and the institution has established a three-pronged approach to programming under the Divisions of Community Health, Community Development and the Hospital. These entities are both interrelated and cooperative. A separate tuberculosis village, L’Escale, funded by employees and donors, provides initial treatment to patients during the infectious phase of the disease.
